Located in Horseshoe Bay in at the south end of Rinca island, Yellow Wall is a spectacular mix of top reef and wall covered in corals, sea cucumbers and featherstars.

Unsurprisingly the feather stars give yellow wall a superficially similar appearance to the neighbouring Cannibal Rock dive site but there’s a different feel here – the site is lighter and brighter, especially in the afternoon with direct sun on it.

The wall starts at 5 metres and drops all the way to 30 metres but staying shallow is probably the most rewarding. There’s plenty to see in the flatter shallow top area of the site before the drop-off.

The wall itself is alive with life – frogfish, sea apples, crabs, shrimps, nudibranches and glassfish, while the top reef has turtles and schools of fish darting about. The density of the growth here is spectacular.

As with the other sites in southern Komodo, it’s usually cold on Yellow Wall compared to central and northern Komodo dive sites. Expect temperatures 25 degrees Celsius or lower.

As a final note, you’ll sometimes find Yellow Wall referred to as the “Yellow Wall of Texas”, which was the name given it by the late, great Texan dive guide Larry Smith, one of the pioneers of diving in Indonesia. I wish I’d had the chance to dive with him.
