One of Komodo’s most famous dive sites, Crystal Rock is a spectacular array of colourful coral reefs and big schools of fish

Crystal Rock is a chunky seamount with a central pinnacle in the middle of the ocean and another pinnacle down at 12 metres. It’s nearby to its equally famous neighbour Castle Rock. Crystal Rock is a big dive site which divers can often see in panoramic vision spread out in front of them as the site is usually blessed with near perfect visibility (hence the name).

Topographically Crystal Rock looks like an underwater mountain, with the peak just breaking the water and then more gently sloping further down into the depths.

Divers typically descend straight to 25 metres and then zig zag their way back up from the slope to the quite steep top. There is a lot of room for manoeuvre and different levels and ledges to hide behind if the current picks up.

The reef is dense, big and colourful. There’s some massive elephant ear corals, huge plate corals and barrel sponges and numerous big bommies carpeted in soft and hard corals.

Crystal Rock is also super fishy – everywhere you look there’s something going on. Whether it’s white tip reef sharks resting under the plate corals, surgeonfish gathering around the peak, batfish on the safety stop or angelfish skittering over the bommies, there’s a dynamism about this dive site that makes it endlessly interesting to dive.
