The Surin Islands have some of the most amazing coral to be found in Thailand, but were badly affected by the tsunami. How have they fared one year on?
I ask the question because I'm finding it quite difficult to get an answer from a cursory search on the Web. The Surin islands lie to the north of the Similan Islands and tend to be overshadowed by the more famous Similans. While I've been to the Similans a few times, I've still to visit the Surin Islands. I've heard it has spectacular coral and good marine life, and is pretty shallow, which makes it ideal for snorkellers as well as divers. Unfortunately, this same lack of depth apparently caused the island's corals to be damaged by the tsunami far more than its deeper dive site counterparts in the Similans.
I just found this report on Thai News that describes a recent return to the Surin islands and says they are recovering well. I'm hoping I can get Asian Diver to commission me to get out there and find out for myself - and to see how well they stand up against the Similans.
