The Amazing Mola Mola Sunfish
The Amazing Mola Mola Sunfish
The Mola Mola is one of the most elusive and amazing fishes to see underwater when diving in Asia - and they've suddenly started appearing off the west coast of England
I didn't know whether to laugh or cry when I saw this story this morning. The huge Mola Mola, also known as the Sunfish, is one of the most bizarre and difficult fish to see when diving in Asia. They're very shy and so hard to find.
But Sky News reports that a whole school of sunfish have been sighted off the West coast of England, thousands of miles from their usual hunting grounds, apparently lured by the warm seas and profusion of their favourite food, jellyfish.
The irony? The west coast of England is where I grew up - and now I'm living on the other side of the world looking for mola mola, they've decided to go over there!
I googled more info about sunfish and discovered this spectacular photo gallery from Mike Johnson of encounters with Mola Mola - they are the strangest looking creatures and you can see just how big they are next to a diver - and see their habit of basking on the surface, hence their "sunfish" moniker.
