Weedy Sea Dragons: Dive Australia

by Chris on February 19, 2006

Unique to the waters of Australia, weedy sea dragons are a spectacular find for any diver, especially if they're lucky enough to be able to get photos too

Jane Wilkinson has posted a great article over at Travel-Dive about her quest to find Weedy Sea Dragons off the coast of Australia. As well as a very thorough and evocative write-up, Jane has some truly spectacular photos of these amazing creatures which are so hard to find because they blend in with seaweed so perfectly (hence their name). Honestly, it's enough to make you want to plunge into the next puddle RIGHT NOW to go and find them yourself! The level of detail and the colours in the photos are just breathtaking.

I saw one of these sea dragons thanks to the sharp eyes of my dive buddy when we were diving in Botany Bay near Sydney a couple of years ago. Jane points out there are Weedy Sea Dragons and Leafy Sea Dragons and I'm not sure which of the two I saw - but it turned a pleasant if unspectacular reef dive into a deeply memorable occasion.
